Studies on Seed Propagation Method of Oenanthe stolonifera DC.

Abstract
In order to find out an effective propagation method of Oenanthe stolonifera which has been propagated vegetatively so far, several experiments on seed germination were carried out. The results were as follows:
1. Large seeds of above 2mm in the diameter germinated better than small ones of (¡Â2mm).
2. Germinability of O. stolonifera seed showed 10% of germination rate in about 25 days, 50% in about 30 days and reached to almost 100% in about 45 days after anthesis.
3. The low temperature treatment was effective in breaking the seed dormancy. However, the duration required for breakdown of dormancy was one year in imbibition storage controlled to low temperature and even in stratification under low temperature, 5 to 6 months were necessary for satisfactory germination.
4. Chemicals as well as plant growth regulators showed little effect on the breakdown of seed dormancy.
5. Even though removing pericarp proved to be effective in breaking the seed dormancy of O. stolonifera, it was not recommendable for practical use because of the technical diAiculties.
6. In spite of the fact that O. stolonifera seed is a light germinator, it could be germinated even under dark condition if temperature was controlled alternately, as shown later.
7. Under light condition, seeds of O. stolonifera showed best germination at 25¡É and optimum temperature range for germination was 20 to 25¡É ; but hardly germinated in the higher temperature than 30¡É.
8. O. stolonifera seeds germinated well in the alternate temperature, 25/15¡É and 20/15¡É, which were low and narrow differences under light condition, while higher and wider differences, 30/15¡É and 35/15¡É, were effective under dark condition.
